Tracy Ehlert for Iowa House added 5 new photos this week on Facebook when she and B2K Learning Center received a Proclamation from Ashley Vanorny in City of Cedar Rapids Iowa Government on March 13.

Thank you to Ashley Vanorny, District 5 Council member, Cedar Rapids for helping with this Proclamation announcing it CACFP Week.

Tracy Ehlert a CACFP take ACTION Challenge ACTIONEER wrote:
CACFP is the Child & Adult Care Food Program. In Linn County there are 67 home child cares (with a total of 614 children being served in those home programs), 45 licensed child care centers, and 6 Boys & Girls Club that participate in CACFP.

The primary goal of the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is to serve nutritious meals to children attending child care homes and centers. Secondary goals are: 1. The establishment of positive eating habits at the earliest stages of development. 2. Reduction of future health care and education costs due to lack of proper early development. 3. Training and support of local child care personnel. Research also indicates that the CACFP is one important factor in providing quality child care.

Children that are cared for by providers participating in the CACFP benefit by being fed nutritious USDA regulated meals that ensure their proper development. These children gain from early nutrition education that helps them establish positive eating habits that will enrich the quality of their diet throughout their life.
Parents of children in child care are assured that their child(ren) receives high quality meals. With proper nutrition, the child is less likely to experience illness and fatigue and will develop at a normal physical and intellectual pace. Good nutrition is the recipe for an all-around happier child.

Providers receive nutrition education and support services from their CACFP sponsor that help them serve nutritious meals and create a positive eating environment for children. The quality of child care provided in our community is improved due to educational and financial resources available to caregivers through the CACFP.
Please join us in honoring all CACFP providers for their invaluable work done on behalf of Iowa children.

HELP! CONGRESS WANTS TO DELAY AND WEAKEN MENU LABELING

2/10/2018

Our partners Public Health Advocates have asked us to pass this information on to you today. Support #menulabeling. Oppose #HR772

Sign on HERE to let your member of Congress know that you support menu labeling.
As you may remember, California was a leader in menu labeling, passing SB 1420 in 2008. When the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2010, it contained its own (even stronger) version of menu labeling that superseded California’s law.  But it has never been implemented.  There has been delay after delay.  Now the FDA is committed to implementing menu labeling in May 2018, but Congress wants to intervene.

The so-called “Common Sense Nutrition Disclosure Act” (HR. 772), will further stall and undercut menu labeling! It is going to make calorie labeling more difficult for people to find, understand, and use.

Studies show that conveniently displaying nutrition information at restaurants can help people make lower-calorie choices; restaurant menu labeling could prevent up to 41,000 cases of childhood obesity and could save over $4.6 billion in healthcare costs over ten years.  This is a nonpartisan issue: 80 percent of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents support menu labeling.

Also, help spread the word on social media by sharing this sample message:
8 out of 10 Americans across all parties—Democrats, Republicans, and Independents—support #menulabeling. Oppose #HR772 that would weaken and delay #menulabeling:http://action.cspinet.org/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=1927&ea.campaign.id=49274.

Sincerely,

Harold Goldstein
